Masterclasses and Chamber Music at the highest level

From 4th to 14th September the Arosa Music Academy, based in the Swiss holiday resort of Arosa, will host a series of masterclasses for piano, wind and string instrumentalists, as well as for singers. Intended for particularly talented young artists from the international arena, the Arosa Music Academy is an extension of the Arosa Music Course Weeks. Each student will participate in masterclasses held by internationally renowned teachers, receiving guidance in technique and interpretation. Chamber music and house concerts further enrich the musical experience.

Brass Master Class 2011 cancelled!

The Illinois Brass Quintet and the Metropolis staff are very sorry to have to cancel this years' edition of the Metropolis Brass Master class in Japan.

Under the given circumstances, we all feel that helping the people who are suffering from the earthquake is an absolute priority at this moment. Therefore, several initiatives have been taken to raise funds to help the victims in Japan.

We wish all the people in Japan very much courage and perseverance for rebuilding their country, and to the families of the victims, we offer our sincere condolences.

The Illinois Brass Quintet in concert!

Our five professors from the USA, Elliot L. Chasanov, Mark E. Moore, Ronald Romm, Bernhard Scully and Jake Walburn, are part of the Illinois Brass Quintet, the faculty brass quintet in residence at the University of Illinois.

This quintet has been around for more than fifty years and is active presenting recitals, clinics, and master classes at secondary schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States of America.

Recent activities include a tour through Poland in 2005, a concert at Carnegie Hall in The City of New York in 2006 and performances at the Burgos Music Festival in Spain in 2006 and 2007 and the Poland Trombone Festival in Warsaw in 2009. They also performed during the Metropolis Master Class 2010 in Bornem, Belgium.

Next on this marvellous list is Japan! During the Metropolis Master Class of 2011 the Illinois Brass Quintet will be performing on the 21st of August.

The Metropolis Music Publishers are pleased to welcome several professors from different nationalities at the 2011 master classes.

They are all famous musicians and wonderful teachers. The 2011 Arosa Music Academy master classes will be taught by the professors from Germany, Estonia, Ukraine, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium.

On this page, we briefly present each of these professors (in alphabetical order by surname).

	Claudio Bohorquez - solo-cellist, chamber musician and teacher - is of Peruvian and Uruguayan descent and was born in Germany. His studies with Boris Pergamenschikow at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne led to successes at international competitions in Moscow and Paris at an early age. First prize at the Geneva International Music Competition launched his career as a soloist, since when he has appeared regularly with the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He is equally in demand playing chamber music with eminent partners worldwide. He has been a guest professor at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin, since 2003.
	The casalQuartet was established in 1996 by its present members, Daria Zappa, Rachel Späth, Markus Fleck and Andreas Fleck. During its formative years the ensemble received expert tuition from the Carmina (Zurich) and Alban Berg (Cologne) string quartets as well as from Walter Levin in Basel. More than one thousand public recitals have consolidated cQ's reputation worldwide while their music projects for younger listeners, and knack of discovering innovative ways of presenting traditional concerts, have become distinguishing features of their creative activities.
	In 1992 Christoph Hartmann was appointed solo oboist to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Before attaining this ultimate distinction, the young musician from Landberg am Lech in Germany had studied with Georg Fischer in Augsburg and Günther Passin at the Musikhochschule in Munich. He now leads a fulfilled life as a musician, playing with orchestras and chamber ensembles, teaching at the Herbert-von-Karajan Academy and giving masterclasses, alongside frequent appearances as a soloist in Europe, Asia and America. In 1999 he established the Landsberger Sommermusiken, a festival for chamber music out of which grew the Ensemble Berlin.
	Estonian born bassoon virtuoso, Martin Kuuskmann is a commanding force bent on redefining the bassoon as a top calibre solo instrument. His frequent concert engagements have included solo appearances with the New York Philharmonic and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestras to name just two. He has appeared as guest solo principal bassoonist with the Seoul Philharmonic and while in New York freelanced with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the New Jersey Symphony. Kuuksmann lives in Seattle.
	Born in Charkow, Ukraine, Konstantin Lifshitz showed such early promise that at the age of five he was admitted to Moscow's prestigious Gnessin music school to study with Tatjana Zelikman. A recording of his performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations at his graduation concert in 1994, when he was aged 17, was later nominated for a Grammy. Further studies followed at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Since 2008 Lifshitz has taught at the Musikhochschule Luzern.
	The Florentine composer and conductor Massimiliano Matesic is conductor of the Youth Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Conservatorium as well as of the Nota Bene Symphony Orchestra and teaches conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg I.Br. He began composing at an early age and entered the Conservatorium in Florence aged 15, studying composition with G.G.Luporini and subsequently with S. Sciarrino. Further studies followed at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg I. Br. He subsequently pursued a successful career as a conductor. He now resides in Kaiserstuhl/AG. Recent commissions of note have been for the Boswil Summer Festival and music for a television production Paganini (RSI).
	Matthias Müller is Professor at the Zurich University of Arts. He is active internationally as interpreter, composer and teacher, as well being Artistic Director of various institutions. He has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Tschaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. Matthias Müller gives regular masterclasses worldwide and has composed over 20 pieces for clarinet.. He lives with his wife, the flautist Magda Schwerzmann, and his three children in Forch near Zurich.
	Christiane Oelze has established a fine reputation as a singer, whether on the international opera stage or on the concert platform. In the course of her career she has appeared with many eminent conductors and with the world's leading orchestras. On the opera stage Christiane Oelze is particularly well known for her Mozart roles, but over the years has built an extensive and varied Lied repertoire. One of her recent recordings is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under Paavo Järvi. From 2003 until 2008 she was Professor of singing at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf.
	Eric Schneider studied piano and mathematics, graduating from the Music Academy in Cologne at the age of 22. After winning first prize in various competitions he decided to take an advanced course in Lied accompaniment taught by Hartmut Höll. Artists such as Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Paul Badura-Skoda and Alfred Brendel along with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau significantly influenced his artistic development. For many years now he has enjoyed an intense artistic collaboration with the eminent singers Christine Schäfer and Matthias Goerne. Eric Schneider has taught Lied repertoire at the UdK Berlin since 2009.
	Magda Schwerzmann has been a lecturer at the Hochschule Luzern since 2005. She is also a guest teacher at the Hochschule der Künste Zurich and at the Swiss Academy for Musical Education (SAMP). Her activities include masterclasses at institutions worldwide, including the Manhatten School of Music and the Boston and St. Petersburg Conservatories as well as solo appearances with ensembles such as the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. As a performer of chamber music Magda Schwerzmann has collaborated with Michael Sanderling, Noemi Nadelmann and many others in Europe, America and Russia.
	Ingolf Turban is Professor at the Hochschule for Music and Dramatic Art, Munich. He has appeared as a soloist in the world's greatest concert halls, from the Philharmonie in Berlin to the Avery Fisher Hall in New York. Working with eminent conductors like Sergiu Celibidache, Charles Dutoit and Zubin Mehta, to name just a few, he commands an impressive repertoire including many rarely performed works. His interpretations of works that he has premiered are considered to be definitive. He has been Artistic Director of the summer festival “Holzhauser Musiktage” near Starnburg Germany since 2007. Ingolf Turban lives with his family in Munich.
	Eddy Vanoosthuyse is professor of clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Ghent and principal clarinet in the Flemish Radio Orchestra. He is an internationally acclaimed soloist and teacher, performing and giving masterclasses in Europe, America and Asia. He particularly likes to appear together in formation with string quartet. In 2005 he was invited by Indiana University, Bloomington to teach the class of Eli Eban while the latter was on sabbatical. In 2002 he was awarded the Honor al Merito by the government of Lima, Peru, in recognition of his high artistic achievements and in 2007 he received a decoration from the Chinese National Clarinet Association.

Third edition in 2011!

Metropolis Music Publishers is proud to present the third edition of the international Metropolis Master Classes, which will take place in Japan for the Brass section and in Switzerland for the Clarinet section.

During the master classes, students will study and play with musicians and professors from all over the world.

In 2011 there are three different Master Classes in which students can participate. The Arosa Music Academy for Bassoon, Clarinet, Oboe and Transverse Flute, starting on September 4th and ending on September 9th, the Arosa Music Academy for Singing, Piano, Violin, Cello and Composition, from September 9th to 14th and the Duo Landini International Summer Course for Contemporary Composition, Creations & Concerts, Chamber Music and Violin Making, which starts on the 1st of August and ends on August 8th.

Originally, we also planned the Metropolis Brass Master Class in Osaka, Japan which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the disaster with the tsunami and the earthquake in Japan earlier this year.

Een nieuw initiatief van Metropolis Music Publishers bvba: de Metropolis Musical Workshops! In 2011-2012 organiseert Metropolis drie verschillende musical workshops in de gemeente Bornem. Tijdens een periode van vijf dagen worden de deelnemers klaargestoomd om een volledige musical op te voeren!

Droomde je er altijd al van om zélf in een musical te spelen? Grijp dan nu je kans! Op één week tijd leer je dansen, zingen en acteren in een leuk verhaal met als afsluiter een echt optreden. Er is geen enkele voorkennis of ervaring vereist!!

In de maanden juli en augustus 2010 organiseert Metropolis Music Publishers voor de tweede maal internationale master classes voor zowel amateur- als preprofessionele musici in de gemeente Bornem. Ook voor deze editie hebben een aantal zeer vooraanstaande internationale solisten hun medewerking toegezegd:

Koperblazers: 21 - 29 juli (‘Illinois Brass Quintet’).

Klarinet en basklarinet: 24 juli - 1 augustus (Eddy Vanoosthuyse, Jan Guns, Hideaki Iwai, J. David Harris & Patrick Hiketick).

Voor deze beide cursussen worden in totaal 50 studenten verwacht, waarvan een aantal buitenlandse. Ervaring uit het verleden heeft ons geleerd dat deze studenten zeer uitkijken naar het verblijf in een gastgezin.
Op deze manier kunnen ze kennismaken met onze gastvrije cultuur en gewoonten en tegelijkertijd een ‘thuis-gevoel’ ervaren.

Voor de gastgezinnen is het dan weer zeer fijn om kennis te maken met mensen uit dikwijls erg verschillende culturen. Er worden dit jaar zeker deelnemers verwacht uit Japan en de USA...

The Metropolis Clarinet Master Class

July 24st - August 1st 2010 (arrivals on the 23rd of July)

Location

Bornem, Belgium

Classes will take place in "Ter Dilft", the Bornem Cultural Centre, which also houses the Bornem Academy for Music, Word and Dance.

Lodging

Participants are given the option to stay with host families in the village of Bornem. In this way, you will come in close contact with Belgian culture and habits. This kind of lodging is included in the registration fee.
You can opt to stay at a local hotel, but this will be at your own expense!
Belgian participants can also choose not to stay in Bornem and return to the comfort of their own homes every evening.

Travel info

The airport closest to Bornem is Brussels Airport. Transportation from and to the airport can be arranged.
Getting from the airport to Bornem by means of public transportation is also possible:

At the airport you can take bus 682, which makes its final stop at the train station of Mechelen
In Mechelen you take the train to Sint-Niklaas which makes a stop in Bornem (it's the third stop, right after Puurs).

Belgian students can get to Bornem by train. You can use this routeplanner to find out which trains will get you there.

Prerequisites

You need at least six years of experience with your instrument in order to be able to participate in the master class.
You need to tell us which three compositions you will be studying for the master class (title and composer). Two of these compositions you can choose freely whereas the third one needs to be from the Metropolis Music Publishers catalogue. Also, you need to provide the copies of the first two compositions yourself, the one you pick from the Metropolis catalogue will be delivered to you by mail.

Registration fee

If you subscribe and pay before the 1st of May, you only pay € 495 to participate!

Afterwards it will cost you € 550.

Payment is possible by means of a regular money transfer or by using a VISA-card.

Detailed programme

July, 23. Arrival of the participants in Bornem

July, 24. Auditions. Based on the outcome of these auditions, students will be divided into groups. In the evening there's a concert by the Illinois Brass Quintet and by the Flanders Clarinet Quartet!

July, 25-27. Three days of classes.

July, 28. Students will have this day off.

July, 29. A trip to Paris, together with the participants of the Brass Master Class. During this trip, the students will visit Buffet-Crampon, the famous wind instrument manufacturer.

July, 30 - August 1. Three days of classes. On the final day, the students will be playing a closing concert.

Second edition in 2010!

Metropolis Music Publishers is proud to present the second edition of the international Metropolis Master Classes, which will take place in the village of Bornem in Belgium and in Monthureux-le-Sec, France.

During the master classes, students will study and play with musicians and professors from all over the world. This year we don't only invite clarinet players, we now also organise a master class focused on all brass instruments! The third master class, organised in France by Duo Landini, is focussed on contemporary composition and chamber music for strings and piano.

So in 2010, the Metropolis Master Class will consist of two parts: the Brass Master Class, which starts on the 21st of July and ends on the 29th, and the Clarinet Master Class, starting on the 24th of July and ending on the 1st of August. During the overlapping days (July 24th-29th) there will be common activities for the participants, such as a concert by the Illinois Brass Quintet and the Flanders Clarinet Quartet on the 25th of July and a trip to France on the 29th of July!

On the final day of the clarinet master class, the third master class will start: the Duo Landini Summer Course, which takes place in Monthureux-le-Sec in France and starts on the 1st of August. There's a cooperation between Metropolis Music Publishers and Duo Landini, but Master Class in France is organised by Duo Landini, while Metropolis takes care of the other two.
